California Chrome is taking up residence in Barn 20 on the Churchill backside, sharing space with the horses of trainer Tom Proctor. The chestnut colt's trainer, Art Sherman, and his wife Faye, had a flight of their own out of Los Angeles later Monday morning.
"Because the best horses in the world are running over a two-day period and because there'll be some good racin'," said veteran trainer Tom Proctor, who nears his 5,000th start by sending 9-2 shot Marketing Mix, with jockey Garrett Gomez, to the $2-million Filly and Mare Turf on Friday.
Trained at the time by Tom Proctor, Coil finished third in the race, his debut. Baffert then made an offer to buy the colt, a chestnut son of Point Given. It was accepted, and Baffert became Coils trainer. Longtime Baffert client Mike Pegram and two partners took ownership of Coil.
