Abstract:The present disclosure provides, in an embodiment, a system for treating a contaminated fluid. The system may include multiple shielded modules in fluid communication with one another. Each module of the system of the present disclosure may include an inner pressure vessel designed to accommodate a treatment medium, the treatment medium being selected to remove radioactive contaminants from a fluid passed through the pressure vessel. The module may also include an outer shield vessel surrounding the pressure vessel and designed to attenuate the radiation from the radioactive contaminants accumulated by the treatment medium in the pressure vessel and facilitate ease of handling and storage of the module together with the contaminated treatment medium. Finally, an annular region may be defined between the pressure vessel and the shield vessel for passing a cooling medium therethrough to remove decay heat from the radioactive contaminants accumulated in the pressure vessel.

Abstract:A system and method for purifying and recycling cold wastewater is provided. Contaminated wastewater is supplied at a temperature no greater than 45 F. through an ultrafilter. The wastewater is fed through a reverse osmosis filter unit. Clean water is reused whereas reject is sent to disposal. Cold temperatures are preferably maintained throughout the treatment process.

Abstract:A method is disclosed for treating liquid radioactive waste to provide reusable water, while reducing the overall volume and water content of the removed solid contaminants. The process is carried out in two separate stages, generally in at least two separate locations. In the first stage, the waste is pretreated at a first site, preferably where the waste was generated, to provide clean water, and a concentrated fraction containing removed suspended and dissolved solids, as well as some remaining water. The pretreatment typically involves passing the liquid waste through one or more microfilters, ultrafilter or nanofilters in combination with a reverse osmosis membrane. In the second stage of the process, the concentrated waste fraction, containing the removed solids, is transported to a second site, where it is thermally treated to remove the remaining water and reduce the volume of the remaining solids.
