  • Wire Combing Device

    view source
  • US Patent:
    44200200, Dec 13, 1983
  • Filed:
    May 7, 1982
  • Appl. No.:
    6/376071
  • Inventors:
James E. McGeary - Harrisburg PA
Walter C. Shatto - Harrisburg PA
  • Assignee:
    AMP Incorporated - Harrisburg PA
  • International Classification:
    B21F 102
  • US Classification:
    140147
  • Abstract:
A combing device for 90 degree axial rotation of a pair of adjacent cable conductors from an original axial orientation. The device comprises a profiled conductor manipulating channel adapted having an upper outwardly flared surface extending the longitudinal length of one sidewall defining the channel. A tapered cut is formed into the flared surface from one end of the channel, and is of decreasing depth therealong, terminating at a point on the flared sidewall surface. Upon simultaneously addressing two parallel and adjacent conductors into the channel at a suitable angle thereto, and drawing the conductors toward the opposite end of the channel while decreasing the angle therebetween, one conductor freely enters the channel, and the other conductor, after having been momentarily deterred by engagement against the tapered cut, rolls into the channel atop the first conductor.
  • Apparatus For Locating Wires In Predetermined Co-Planar Relationship To Each Other

    view source
  • US Patent:
    41251377, Nov 14, 1978
  • Filed:
    Oct 3, 1977
  • Appl. No.:
    5/839148
  • Inventors:
Walter C. Shatto - Harrisburg PA
  • Assignee:
    AMP Incorporated - Harrisburg PA
  • International Classification:
    B21F 102
    H01R 4300
  • US Classification:
    140147
  • Abstract:
Apparatus for deploying a plurality of wires in predetermined co-planar relationship to each other comprises a templet plate having a plurality of wire-receiving grooves extending thereacross. The grooves diverge from each other so that wires positioned in the grooves will be located in predetermined spaced-apart relationship. The wires are pressed into the grooves by a roller which is movable across the templet plate. In order to control the wires and to ensure proper placement of the wires in the grooves, a controller member is disposed in front of the roller and movable with the roller across the templet. The controller elevates portions of the wires which are adjacent to the roller and approximately aligns the individual wires with the grooves into which they are to be pressed.

  • International Classification:
    H01R 1358
  • US Classification:
    339107
  • Abstract:
Multi-contact electrical connector comprises two housing parts which can be telescopically assembled to each other. Means are provided on at least one of the housing parts to spread or otherwise reposition the conductors on the end of a cable, which has been positioned between opposed surfaces of the two housing parts, when the housing parts are assembled to each other so that after assembly, the conductors will be precisely located adjacent to the mating face of the assembled housing. Electrical contact means are provided adjacent to the mating end of the connector face which electrically contacts the conductors and permits them to be connected to further conductors on a printed circuit board or in a complementary connector.

  • US Patent:
    43679099, Jan 11, 1983
  • Filed:
    Oct 15, 1980
  • Appl. No.:
    6/197049
  • Inventors:
Walter C. Shatto - Harrisburg PA
Walter M. Young - Largo FL
  • Assignee:
    AMP Incorporated - Harrisburg PA
  • International Classification:
    H01R 1300
  • US Classification:
    339176MF
  • Abstract:
A connector for terminating flat multiconductor cable has a plurality of funnel entries at one end thereof which communicate with grooves in oppositely facing sidewalls of the connector to guide the conductors in the cable to new centerlines for termination to slotted plate ground and signal terminals located in rows of cavities in each of the sidewalls. Signal terminals are located at the opposite end of the connector and ground conductors are located on a common bus spaced between the ends.
  • Apparatus For Inserting Wires Into Terminals And For Manufacturing Electrical Harnesses

    view source
  • US Patent:
    40430170, Aug 23, 1977
  • Filed:
    Feb 11, 1976
  • Appl. No.:
    5/657138
  • Inventors:
Kenneth Foster Folk - Harrisburg PA
Milton Dean Ross - Harrisburg PA
Walter Clifton Shatto - Harrisburg PA
  • Assignee:
    AMP Incorporated - Harrisburg PA
  • International Classification:
    H01R 4304
  • US Classification:
    29749
  • Abstract:
Apparatus for inserting wires into terminals comprises a templet plate having wire-receiving slots extending therethrough from one surface to the opposite surface. The slots extend to one edge of the plate so that wires positioned on one surface adjacent to the edge will, when pressed progressively against the surface, move into the slots. Inserters move through the slots and insert the wires into a connector positioned under the other face of the templet. In accordance with a further aspect of the disclosure, a shuttle type wire feed is provided in combination with the templet plate and a second wire insertion apparatus is provided to produce electrical harnesses.
  • Apparatus For Deploying Twisted Wires

    view source
  • US Patent:
    41322517, Jan 2, 1979
  • Filed:
    Oct 3, 1977
  • Appl. No.:
    5/839149
  • Inventors:
Kenneth F. Folk - Harrisburg PA
Walter C. Shatto - Harrisburg PA
  • Assignee:
    AMP Incorporated - Harrisburg PA
  • International Classification:
    B21F 102
  • US Classification:
    140147
  • Abstract:
Apparatus for deploying a plurality of twisted pairs of wires and separating the two wires of each pair comprises a templet having recesses extending thereacross in one direction. Each recess has one portion which is dimensioned to receive a single twisted pair of wires and the one portion of each recess merges with another portion comprising two separate recesses, each of which is dimensioned to receive one wire only of a twisted pair. The twisted pairs are pressed onto the recesses by a roller which moves across the surface. A controller is mounted adjacent to, and in advance of, the roller and the twisted pairs extend from beneath the roller over the controller. When the roller approaches the portions of each recess which receive only a single wire, the spacing between the roller and the controller changes so that they are separated by a distance substantially equal to the diameter of a single wire. The spacing between the roller and the controller causes the individual twisted pairs to become untwisted so that the two wires of each twisted pair are pressed into the two recesses.
  • High Voltage Lead Assembly And Connector

  • Assignee:
    AMP Incorporated - Harrisburg PA
  • International Classification:
    H01R 1300
  • US Classification:
    439275
  • Abstract:
A pair of small diameter lead assemblies as a complete electrically and environmentally sealed matable high voltage connection suitable for use under rugged environmental conditions, have a plug element and a receptacle conditions, have a plug element and a receptacle element physically matable therewith. The lead assemblies can each include annular retention clips therearound enabling insertion into and retention within passageways of matable housings of a multi-terminal hybrid connector assembly, to enable certain existing connectors to be converted into use as high voltage connector assemblies for rugged conditions without housing modification. The plug has a small diameter dielectric annular shell with a socket terminal in an internal passageway; and the receptacle has a small diameter dielectric annular shell having a pin terminal in its internal passageway which is matable with the socket terminal. A forward receptacle portion of the receptacle surrounding the pin contact section snugly receives thereinto a forward reduced dimension plug portion of the plug. Spaced apart O-rings disposed along and tightly around the plug portion are compressed by the receptacle portion and assuredly seal the annular space therebetween, preventing generation of voltage discharge and minimizing corona formation thereat.
