  • Hip Replacement System And Method For Implanting The Same

    view source
  • US Patent:
    55078338, Apr 16, 1996
  • Filed:
    Sep 28, 1994
  • Appl. No.:
    8/314542
  • Inventors:
William W. Bohn - Mission Hills KS
  • Assignee:
Kim-Med, Inc. - Kansas City MO
  • International Classification:
    A61F 232
  • US Classification:
    623 23
  • Abstract:
A joint replacement system particularly useful in total hip arthroplasty includes a prosthesis presenting a macrotextured dimpled surface thereon for promoting biological fixation of the prosthesis to the surrounding bone. The prosthesis may be, for example, a femoral prosthesis which is designed for insertion along the intramedullary canal of a bone. The femoral prosthesis presents a body portion having a cruciform cross-section and a distal portion which is wide in the coronal plane for conforming to the endosteum of the bone but narrow in the sagittal plane for provide good flexure with the bone. The femoral prosthesis is configured to leave a portion of the intramedullary canal undisturbed to provide better circulation to the bone-growth regions after surgery. The prosthesis may also be an acetabular component having the macrotextured outer surface which permits the shell-like acetabular component to be thinner and also to avoid the necessity of pins or screws ordinarily required to attach an acetabular component to the acetabulum of the pelvis. The invention further includes a novel method of implanting the prosthesis which includes leaving a portion of the intramedullary canal intact rather than reaming out the intramedullary canal to receive the prosthesis as is conventional.

    view source
  • US Patent:
    53614119, Nov 8, 1994
  • Filed:
    May 8, 1992
  • Appl. No.:
    7/857922
  • Inventors:
William W. Bohn - Mission Hills KS
Susan M. Koppe - Kansas City MO
  • International Classification:
    A41D 100
    A41D 1000
  • US Classification:
    2 69
  • Abstract:
A garment for protecting health care workers in environments of exposure to potentially contaminated fluids includes a tubular sheath having a pair of adhesive strips angularly oriented thereon for conforming the sheath to a leg and foot of the worker. The free ends of one strip are provided with an adhesive surface whereby the sheath may easily be conformed for a variety of different sizes of workers. The garment is preferably provided as a one-piece trouser for convenience of wearing, whereby the feet and legs of the worker are protected from contamination.
  • Infection Control Surgical Drape And Method Of Making Surgical Incision

    view source
  • US Patent:
    55929524, Jan 14, 1997
  • Filed:
    Aug 18, 1995
  • Appl. No.:
    8/516797
  • Inventors:
William W. Bohn - Mission Hills KS
  • International Classification:
    A61B 1900
  • US Classification:
    128849
  • Abstract:
A surgical drape is provided for reducing the potential for contamination at a surgical incision site which includes a first sheet having an opening for passing a body part therethrough and a second sheet connected to the first sheet proximate the opening. The second sheet is preferably of transparent synthetic resing material having adhesive coating on one side thereof. A third sheet may be provided, with the body part positioned between the second and third sheets. The second and third sheets may be connected along their respective side edges to isolate the surgical incision area. In the corresponding method, an incision may be made through the transparent second sheet, with the second sheet adhering to the body part to limit the contamination of the incision site by solids or fluids contacting or coming from the surrounding tissue.
