Abstract:

A foam medical cast is formed by dispensing a bead of a pressurized polyurethane prepolymer composition onto a bandage strip making a cast preform. The dispensed prepolymer composition is allowed to expand and foam under ambient conditions, and the resultant preform is wrapped over an undergarment disposed on a human body part to be immobilized. The undergarment is premoistened and the wrapped cast preforms are moistened in order to activate the prepolymer composition. The cast is then allowed to cure to a rigid foam material.

Abstract:

This invention concerns apparatus for injecting a special ingredient into a pre-filled product container having superatmospheric internal pressure. Structurally, a coupling member is fabricated to define a cavity that snugly receives a portion of the container body to establish alignment therewith. This coupling member includes a mounting structure for use in positioning a syringe assembly with respect to a pierceable portion of the container body. A syringe assembly includes a syringe body that is mounted on the mounting structure and defines an internal chamber for containing a metered amount of a fluid product ingredient or amendment, the syringe assembly further including a cannulated needle fastened to the syringe body in fluid-transfer relationship with the product ingredient chamber. A wrench member is assemblable with the coupling member and includes an actuator for selectively engaging the syringe assembly and forceably reducing the internal volume of the product ingredient chamber. Force-multiplying mechanical arrangements are arranged to act between the coupling member and the wrench member for urging the actuator to express the contents of the ingredient chamber through the needle and into the product container against its internal pressure.

Abstract:

Dispensing apparatus for use in making a foam medical cast comprises a valved canister charged with foam-making chemicals, a rolled-up strip of bandage fabric, a yoke arrangement for holding and allowing rotation of the bandage roll and having a mount for securing the canister in rigid position, and a manually operable handle pivotally mounted to the yoke arrangement. The handle cooperates with the yoke arrangement in enabling the imposition of linear actuating force on the canister valve so that operation of the handle opens the valve, simultaneous transit of the yoke arrangement to unroll the bandage produces a medical cast preform of foam deposited on the outstretched bandage strip.

Abstract:

A gun is disclosed for mixing and dispensing a settable fluid product having separately stored constituents. The gun has primary valves for controlling the flow of product fluid constituents along separate primary paths and into a common mixing and dispensing nozzle. A secondary valve permits the flow of a purge fluid along secondary passages, past the primary valves, along at least parts of the primary passages and through the nozzle. According to an important aspect of the invention, a disposable nozzle is arranged with separate, independently operable valves contained therein for isolating the interaction of the product constituents to the nozzle.

Abstract:

An orthotic support system is embodied as cooperating seat and back cushion elements for assembly into a wheelchair frame. These cushion elements are custom-fitted to the individual patient by injecting an incipiently reacting and foaming, fluorocarbon-blown polyurethane chemical system into the space between a rigid mold box and an elastic membrane which is fitted over the open face of the mold box and which is deformably engaged by the appropriate portions of the patient's torso. The foaming mixture is injected in predetermined excess volume and expands against the physical resistance of the patient's body where contact is made with the corresponding regions of the elastic membrane; and this forcible engagement produces selective densification of the foam where a high degree of body support is required. Elsewhere, the foam expands more freely and stretchably inflates the membrane to generate graduatedly less dense regions matably contoured to fit or partially embrace the patient. For body alignment purposes, specialized bolsters are integrally formed in the cushion elements.

Abstract:

A cellular synthetic medical cast is made using fabric strips and a dispenser unit containing blowing agent and a water-activatable polyurethane prepolymer under superatmospheric pressure. A trimerizing catalyst is infused in the prepolymer mass immediately before the composition is dispensed in a bead onto the fabric strip; and thereafter, mechanical compressive force is applied to the foam bead to dimension it, embed it in the fabric and regulate the degree of reticulation. The impregnated strips are wrapped to form the cast and contacted with moisture to produce rapid cure of the prepolymer.
