  • Filed:
    Feb 5, 2008
  • Appl. No.:
    12/026318
  • Inventors:
William M. Dye - Cypress TX, US
Nels A. Hansen - Spring TX, US
  • Assignee:
Baker Hughes Incorporated - Houston TX
  • International Classification:
    E21B 21/06
  • US Classification:
    175206, 175207
  • Abstract:
A system for forming a subterranean wellbore may include a pump and an additive supply. The pump pumps a drilling fluid into the wellbore while also generating a pressure differential that draws an additive across a supply line connected to the additive supply. The drilling fluid may be a gas or a liquid. A method for forming a wellbore may include drilling the wellbore, circulating a drilling fluid in the wellbore using a pump; and supplying an additive to the drilling fluid by flowing the additive across a supply line using a pressure differential generated by the pump. The pump may generate a vacuum pressure at a supply line outlet and/or create a pressure differential in the supply line. The flow of additive across the supply line may be regulated and/or stopped when the pump is not operating.

Base oil can be recovered from contaminated O/SBF by combining a chemical process with a mechanical process. The chemical treatment includes adding a demulsifier, an anionic surfactant, a non-ionic surfactant and/or a mutual solvent to the contaminated O/SBF in an amount effective to separate the base oil from the contaminated O/SBF fluid followed by mechanical separation of oil from water, and optionally from any solids present. The recovered base oil (i.e. conventional drilling fluid, conductive drilling fluid and constant rheology drilling fluid, etc.) may then be reformulated to make a new OBM of the same type from which the base oil was recovered, or as a fuel for engines.
