Abstract:

A method of detecting and identifying bacteria, micro-organisms or plants in a liquid or gaseous medium, the bacteria, micro-organisms or plants being of the kind which produce signaling molecules in intercellular space, includes positioning a biosensor in the liquid or gaseous medium, the biosensor having a biolayer matched to specific signaling molecules to be detected whereby the biolayer is reactive thereto in a manner which varies operation of the sensor. Such variation of the operation of the biosensor is detected to thereby determine the presence and purpose of the bacteria, micro-organisms or plants in the liquid or gaseous medium.

Abstract:

A method of incorporating biomolecules in a thin film mounted on a substrate, with the film having a thickness of not more than about 10 microns, includes providing a metal structure on the substrate between the thin film and the substrate, positioning a medium containing biomolecules in contact with a side of the film remote from the metal substrate, and applying a predetermined electrical voltage between the metal substrate and the medium to cause biomolecules to migrate in an electrophoretic manner from the medium into the thin film.

The various embodiments of the present disclosure relate generally bulk-acoustic-wave resonators. An exemplary embodiment of the present invention provides a bulk-acoustic-wave resonator comprising an acoustic reflector, a substantially c-axis oriented hexagonal crystal structure, and a plurality of electrodes. The crystal structure is solidly-mounted to the acoustic reflector. The bulk-wave resonator resonates in at least two non-harmonically-related operational modes.

Abstract:

A thin-film bulk acoustic wave delay line device providing true-time delays and a method of fabricating same. An exemplary device can comprise several thin-film layers including thin-film transducer layers, thin-film delay layers, and stacks of additional thin-film materials providing acoustic reflectors and matching networks. The layer material selection and layer thicknesses can be controlled to improve impedance matching between transducers and the various delay line materials. For example, the transducer layers and delay layers can comprise piezoelectric and amorphous forms of the same material. The layers can be deposited on a carrier substrate using standard techniques. The device can be configured so that mechanical waves propagate solely within the thin films, providing a substrate-independent device. The device, so constructed, can be of a small size, e.g. 40 μm per side, and capable of handling high power levels, potentially up to 20 dBm, with low insertion loss of approximately 3 dB.

Abstract:

An Acoustic Charge Transport Imager, suitable for use as a High Definition Television (HDTV) camera element, is disclosed in which an array of amorphous hydrogenated silicon based avalanche photodiodes are combined with acoustic charge transport channels in a GaAs substrate, to achieve very high speed read out of photogenerated charge. High speed read out allows the fabrication of detector arrays large enough to meet the resolution requirements of HDTV while ensuring operation within the timing constraints of the HDTV frame rate.

Abstract:

The present invention is directed to a combined SAW sensor and a SPR sensor for evaluating an analyte, as well as a novel method for evaluating an analyte by utilizing a surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensor to determine the mass of the analyte and utilizing a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor to determine the permittivity of the analyte. In accordance with one aspect of the invention, an apparatus is provided for evaluating an analyte. In one embodiment, the apparatus includes a piezoelectric substrate, a SAW sensor disposed on the substrate, and a SPR sensor disposed on the substrate in close proximity to the SAW sensor. In another embodiment, the apparatus more broadly includes a SAW sensor and a SPR sensor coupled to the surface acoustic wave sensor. In a preferred embodiment, the apparatus the SAW sensor includes two interdigital transducers and a chemically sensitive film interposed between the two interdigital transducers. The apparatus further includes an acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF) disposed on the substrate, and interposed between the SAW sensor and the SPR sensor.

Abstract:

An improved ultrasonic transducer fabricated on a silicon base has a piezoelectric layer of polyvinylidene fluoride-trfluroethylene copolymer. The piezoelectric layer is sandwiched between two conductive electrodes, all of which are supported on a dielectric layer on top of the silicon base. At least one of the electrodes forms a Fresnel zone plate to focus the ultrasonic signals from the transducers. To improve the performance of the transducer, the silicon base behind the active area is removed, leaving the dielectric layer as a membrane to support the electrodes and the piezoelectric layer. The resulting void in the silicon base is filled with an acoustically matched backing, such as an epoxy, to enhance the wideband performance of the transducer. The transducer is especially suited for characterizing anatomical structures or features requiring very high resolution.

Abstract:

For widening the temperature range of a reflective array device configured on a substrate having an anisotropic temperature coefficient of delay, such as ST-quartz material, so that the signal strength does not decrease appreciably as the temperature of the device is changed over a broad range, the structural shape of the reflective array is configured such that the reflection angles of the discontinuity-creating surface structure vary across the reflecting edges of the discontinuity stripe (e. g. groove or rib) pattern. In one embodiment, the stripe pattern of the grating may be varied so that the reflection angles vary for alternating stripes. In another embodiment, opposite edges of a stripe may be non-parallel so that the reflection angles vary for each stripe. It is also possible to amplitude weight the frequency response characteristic of a grating by controlling the physical structure of the individual stripes of which a grating pattern is formed. The use of a dot array configuration is especially advantageous in this regard since amplitude weighting can be achieved simply by controlling the dot array density of each stripe, implemented in a straightforward manner by suitable design of the grating mask.
