Abstract:

Adding free thiol compounds to colloidal gold markers enhances both the rate at which they bind to proteins or other analytes, and the sensitivity of those reactions. The addition of thiol is most effective when the thiol is added to the reaction mixture at about the same time as the gold nanoparticles. The presence of thiol compounds in colloidal gold staining reactions enhances both kinetics and thermodynamic equilibrium. The reaction time decreases, and the sensitivity of detection increases by approximately an order of magnitude.

Abstract:

A method is disclosed for enhancing interactions between nonpolar substances and polar liquids, such as interactions between nonpolar polymers and aqueous systems, using amphipathic peptides, without the need for conventional surfactants. The nonpolar substance may either be pretreated to enhance its interactions with polar liquids, or the polar liquid (e.g., water) may be pretreated to enhance the interactions. It is possible to coat large surface areas on nonpolar substances uniformly with polar liquids. Nonpolar particles may be uniformly suspended in polar liquids, to an extent that has not been previously reported. The alteration of the nonpolar surface can be surprisingly durable. The treated surface may be rinsed, and the treated nonpolar surface will still retain its enhanced properties for interacting with polar liquids. By contrast, conventional surfactants are washed away when the water or other polar liquid is removed.

Abstract:

Anaplasma marginale antigen, antigen compositions, vaccine and process for the production of said antigen, antigen composition and vaccine are disclosed. The Anaplasma marginale is free of the erythrocyte antigens that cause neonatal isoerythrolysis, and effective as a vaccinate which will not only protect the vaccinate against bovine anaplasmosis, but does not induce neonatal isoerythrolysis in offspring of vaccinates.

Abstract:

Micro-particles of transition metals or their compounds can be generated as an integral part of a fiber by first attaching a nucleating agent to the fiber, and then adding a solution of metal ions. The ions are reduced by the nucleating agent in the fiber, and micro-particles are generated in or on the fiber. Because of the strong color signal resulting from a low concentration of metal micro-particles, the method is cost effective even when using gold or titanium ions. Various colors were generated by changing the size and spacing of the micro-particles, the metal or metal complex used, and the characteristics of the fiber. The dyed fibers displayed colors ranging from pink, red, purple, yellow, orange, peach, brown, gold, silver, grey, green, and black. These colors resisted bleaching by either chemicals or light.

Abstract:

An immunoassay method for one-step detection of specific antibodies which includes incubation of a solid phase support or matrix having a spot of the antigen bound thereto with a sample of the clinical fluid to be tested in the presence of a signal developing reagent, including a detector substance, which is preferably a colloidal metal sol, and a ligand, such as protein A or other antibody binding ligand. A diagnostic field kit containing the test antigens and signal developing reagent is also described.
