Abstract:

Apparatus for connection to an outdoor water line carrying water at a selected pressure, for producing a selected low flow rate of water from the water line when the outdoor temperature drops below a selected temperature, which comprises an orifice in the end of the water line of selected small diameter, a closed chamber means having an expansible portion, filled with a selected condensible gas, for which the vapor pressure varies with temperature in a known manner, and closure means positioned adjacent the orifice and means connecting the expansible portion of the chamber to the closure means to shut off the flow of water when the temperature is above a selected value, and to open the orifice to a small trickle flow of water, whenever the temperature outdoors is less than a selected value, such as the freezing point of water.

Abstract:

A pumping system protection device which continuously monitors the rate of flow from a pump, which provide pressurized liquid from a pump to a tank, through a check valve, such as can be used in a water well, for example, to provide water to a pressurized receiving tank. An orifice of selected small size is provided in the flow line means to the check valve and receiving tank. The purpose of this orifice is to bleed the pressure in the flow line whenever the pump stops delivering liquid. The pressure in the flow line at the point of the orifice is monitored by a pressure sensitive switch, which closes a contact when the pressure is below a selected small value. The contact controls power to the pump motor. If there is no liquid flow the contacts open, and power to the pump is cut off. If when the power switch is closed and liquid flows from the pump, the pressure sensitive switch will open its contact and leave the power switch in the closed position.

Abstract:

A float operated valve for controlling the rate of flow of water from a pipe carrying water under pressure, to a vessel, comprises a pipe having an end opening of selected diameter and a flange of larger diameter surrounding the pipe. A flexible diaphragm is attached over the flange having a central closure pad adapted to cut off water flow when pressed against the pipe. A small orifice is drilled through the diaphragm so that when the flow is shut off, water can still flow through the orifice to the second side of the diaphragm. A second short pipe having a similar flange is bolted against the diaphragm to the first flange, to provide a water tight seal. There is a second small orifice in the second end of the second pipe, and a float mechanism is provided with a closure tip to close the second orifice when the water level is at a selected value. The closure tip provided can vary the size of the second orifice so that as soon as it is opened, the orifice size is a minimum. As the water level drops, the tip moves farther away and the orifice is enlarged.

Abstract:

Apparatus for automatically opening an orifice to allow flow when ambient temperature drops below a predetermined level, such as the freezing point of water. The apparatus is for connection to a liquid line that carries liquid at a selected pressure for producing a selected low flow rate of liquid from the liquid line when the ambient temperature drops below a selected temperature. The apparatus comprises an orifice in the end of the liquid line of selected small diameter, a closed chamber means having an expansible portion filled with a selected condensible gas, for which the vapor pressure varies with temperature in a known manner. The apparatus further comprises a valve assembly selectively positioned adjacent the orifice and at a specific distance from the expansible portion of the closed chamber. The closure means is selectively positioned by means of spacers positioned adjacent the valve assembly. A means connecting the expansible portion of the chamber to a closure means in the valve assembly is provided to shut off the flow of liquid by sealing an orifice when the temperature is above a selected value, and to open the orifice to allow a small trickle flow of liquid whenever the ambient temperature is less than a selected value, such as the freezing point of water.

Abstract:

An energy saver control system for prevention of water freezing in an outdoor tank, such as a stock tank, which involves a conventional type of water level control valve to maintain a selected level of water in the tank, and an electrical switch which is controlled by the pressure which is in the water line leading to the water level control valve. Means are provided to control the rate of water flow into the tank to a selected low value, sufficient for prevention of freezing of the surface of the water in the tank. When water is flowing into the tank the electrical heater is cut off. The electrical switch is controlled by the pressure in the water line leading to the water level control means.
