Abstract:
The present invention is a user interface () for an ideographic character input device () comprising three rows () of adjacent input keys. A first row () includes keys that represent linear character strokes, a third row () includes keys that represent non-linear character strokes, and the second row () includes keys that represent a linear character stroke, a non-linear character stroke and a dot. The user interface () may also function as a numeric keypad in which the first row () includes keys 1 through 3, the second row () includes keys 4 through 6 and the third row () includes keys 7 through 9. The three rows () include single stroke keys corresponding to individual character strokes used to form a particular ideographic character. The user interface also includes at least one combination stroke key corresponding to a particular activation sequence of the single stroke keys used to form the ideographic character. A processor () of the device () is capable of forming the ideographic character, or a portion thereof, in two ways: upon selection of the particular activation sequence of the single stroke keys and upon selection of the combination stroke key.
Macromolecular Arrays On Polymeric Brushes And Methods For Preparing The Same
Polymeric brush substrates and methods for their preparation are provided. Methods are also provided for preparing macromolecular arrays on such polymeric brush substrates. Using polymeric brush substrates allows control over functional site density as well as wettability and porosity of the substrate. These polymeric brushes are useful in solid-phase synthesis of arrays of peptides, polynucleotides or small organic molecules.

Abstract:
A numeric keypad () for entering ideographic characters is provided. The numeric keypad () comprises a first set of input keys () corresponding to numerals 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, and a second set of input keys () corresponding to numeral 6, 7, 8, 9, and 0. Each of the first set of input keys () has a predefined single character stroke, which complies with the GB18031 standard. The second set of input keys () is assigned a first particular sequence of the predefined single character strokes and a second particular sequence of the predefined single character strokes different from the first particular sequence of the predefined single character strokes.

Synthesis Of Functional Polymers And Block Copolymers On Silicon Oxide Surfaces By Nitroxide-Mediated Living Free Radical Polymerization In Vapor Phase

International Classification:

US Classification:

Abstract:
Nitroxide mediated free radical polymerization of vaporized vinyl monomers, including acrylic acid (AAc), styrene (St), N-2-(hydroxypropyl) methacrylamide (HPMA) and N-isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAAm), on silicon wafers is demonstrated. FTIR, ellipsometry and contact angle goniometry were used to characterize the chemical structures, thickness and hydrophilicity of the films. The growth of film is linearly proportional to its reaction time, leading to the easy and exact control of polymer film thickness from nanometers to submicrons. The capability of polymerizing various monomers allows us to fabricate various functional polymer brushes. The reversible thermo-responsiveness of a 200 nm thick grafted poly(NIPAAm) film in aqueous solution is demonstrated with over 50% change in thickness at its lower critical solution temperature. A tri-block copolymer of poly(AAc)-b-polySt-b-poly(HPMA) is successfully synthesized, proving the renewability of TEMPO-mediated polymerization at vapor phase. Surface polymer composition and morphology is thus controlled at nanoscale by utilizing vapor phase surface-initiated controlled polymerization.

Method And Apparatus For Sorting Character Strings Having Complex Characters

International Classification:
G06F 7/00
US Classification:

Abstract:
A method and apparatus () are provided for sorting character strings having complex characters, like accented characters for example. Complex characters having a base character and a linguistic modifier are stored () in decomposed form, with the base character being stored as a base data element () and the modifier being stored as a modifier data element (). Elements are selected from two or more character strings and are compared () by referencing a look-up table () listing the priorities of the various elements. The character strings are then sorted () according to these priorities. When implemented in a computational device () having modifier keys () and character keys (), a keypad activity detection module () detects actuation of keys and stores the base data elements and modifier data elements. A sort module () then sorts the corresponding character strings by comparing elements in an atomic, piecewise fashion by referencing the look-up table ().
