Abstract:

A live video feed is seamlessly inserted into a static background image while maintaining the proper positioning and scaling of the combined image. The current frame of the live video feed is first texturized onto a surface. The surface is a set of points that are translated to the location, e. g. , latitude/longitude coordinates, of the live video source. A series of matrix transformations of the texturized surface coordinates is performed. First, the texturized surface is rotated to be tangential to the earth at the location of the live video source. Next, the texturized surface is rotated again to reflect the heading of the live video source. Lastly, the texturized surface is scaled to conform to the background image. The transformed live image is then inserted into the larger background image in its proper position and displayed.

Abstract:

A preferred route may be determined from an origin location to a destination location. The preferred route avoids a particular maneuver or particular maneuvers identified by a user. The determination is made by processing directed links (e. g. , one-way edges) in a graph that includes one or more links and two or more nodes. The determination of a preferred route may include an estimate of the time required at one or more intersections along alternative routes and/or an estimate of the time required to travel the alternative routes based on the day of the week or the day of the year in which travel occurs. Individual routing preferences, such as a preference of a rural over an urban route and avoiding particular maneuvers in a route, also may be considered.

Techniques are provided for presenting a route in a manner that emphasizes the route and provides context information. For example, a vivid color or vivid colors may be used to display the route, and pastel colors or other desaturated colors may be used for non-route context information. This may result in a map in which the vivid colors of the route stand out over the faded style of the non-route context information to emphasize the route. In this manner, the map may both emphasize the route and provide context information for the route.

Techniques are provided for reducing the number of maneuvers presented in narrative driving directions for a route from an origin location to a destination location. To do so, driving directions are not provided for maneuvers for areas with which a person is likely to be familiar, such as neighborhood streets near the person's house, office, or another familiar location. A route from a user-specified origin to a user-specified destination is determined. Driving directions are presented only for a portion of the route. The portion of the route for which driving directions are presented may be identified based on an arterial category of roads included in the route.
