Abstract:
Abatement of combustion by Li-ion battery is achieved by positioning a mixture comprising a thermally destabilizable solid fluoropolymer and a fluorinated composition with respect to the battery, the positioning being effective to provide the abatement of combustion of the battery, the mixture preferably being a semi-solid and having the proximity to the battery to provide the combustion abatement effect, preferably as a coating on at least a portion of the battery.

Abstract:
A Li-ion battery is provided in combination with fluorinated material positioned effective to abate combustion by said battery, the fluorinated material being normally non-gaseous and non-liquid and being itself effective to provide the combustion abatement by said battery, such fluorinated material being is such forms as the material of construction of the battery case containing the battery, film wrapped around said battery, and/or semi-solid material at least proximate to the battery, such as by forming a coating on said battery or said film on said battery.

The present invention provides a process for modifying a Li-ion battery having a region of electrochemical activity and an enclosure therefor, said process comprising forming at least one chamber within said enclosure separate from said region of electrochemical activity, positioning combustion abatement agent within said chamber, whereby said combustion abatement agent is not in contact with said region of electrochemical activity, said chamber being pressure or heat sensitive, whereby when said region of electrochemical activity overheats, said chamber is breached, allowing said combustion abatement agent to contact said region of electrochemical activity to abate combustion of said region of electrochemical activity, wherein exemplary of combustion abatement agent is the composition comprising liquid fluoropolyether and exemplary of the of the chamber exhibiting pressure or heat sensitivity is to include a low melting, non-flammable polymer such as polyvinyl alcohol in the material of construction of the chamber.

Abstract:
A thermoplastic composition including a resin phase and 10% to 55%, especially 25% to 45% of glass fibers by weight of the composition is disclosed. The resin phase includes a polysiloxane block copolymer including polydimethylsiloxane blocks and polycarbonate blocks derived from bisphenol A. The resin phase further includes a polycarbonate and has between 2.0 wt % and 10 wt % by weight of siloxane. The thermoplastic composition has (i) a notched Izod impact strength of at least 150 Joules per meter measured at 23 C. according to ASTM D256, (ii) a tensile strength greater than 95 MPa as determined by ASTM D638, (iii) a tensile modulus greater than 10,900 MPa as determined by ASTM D638 and (iv) an unnotched Izod impact strength greater than 775 Joules per meter measured at 23 C. according to ASTM D256.
