Abstract:

The invention comprises a composition and method for controlling the gloss of surface covering products through curing of the composition to create a wearlayer surface, and preferably on a floor covering product. The surface covering product preferably is prepared by application of an aromatic polyester acrylate composition including a flatting agent and/or hard particles, and at least one free-radical generating compound to a substrate, and then the coating is partially cured by exposure to low peak irradiance UV light in either ambient or inert air, followed by fully curing the coating with high peak irradiance UV light in preferably an inert atmosphere to form a low gloss abrasion resistant wearlayer surface. Alternatively, a high gloss wearlayer surface is obtained by solely exposing the preferred composition to high peak irradiance UV light in ambient atmosphere. Furthermore, a differential gloss flooring product is obtained by using the present inventive method described herein.

Abstract:

A radiation curable biobased coating, such as a UV/EB curable biobased coating, for flooring applications includes a biobased component comprising renewable and/or biobased materials. The biobased component is selected from the group consisting of a biobased resin, a biobased polyol acrylate, or a biobased polyol. The biobased component is blended with a coating formula. The coating formula includes at least one initiator. The radiation curable biobased coating contains at least about 5% weight of renewable materials or biobased content.

A flooring product comprises a heterogeneous design layer having multiple regions wherein two regions comprise compositions having different recycle content or renewable content. The thickness of the design layer may be greater than the dimensions of the regions or the regions may extending from the top surface of the layer to the bottom surface of the design layer. The heterogeneous layer may be composed of consolidated particles/chips which may contain a polyester binder system with a renewable component. Abstract:

Methods for synthesizing saturated and unsaturated polyol polymers are disclosed. In one embodiment, the method involves the ring-opening polymerization of lactones, lactides and/or glycolides using hydroxy moiety-containing polymerization initiators, which initiators can include one or more double bond-containing moieties such as (meth)acrylates. The ring-opening polymerization is catalyzed using a lipase enzyme. In another embodiment, the polyol polymers are prepared by the esterification of a di- or polycarboxylic acid with a polyhydric alcohol or a polyhydric alcohol modified to include one or more (meth)acrylate moieties, using an enzymatic catalyst, advantageously avoiding the use of an acidic or heavy metal catalyst. The polyol polymers can be used to prepare urethanes or urethane acrylates, and the urethanes or urethane acrylates used in coating compositions, for example, to provide a coating to surface coverings such as floor, wall and ceiling coverings. The polyol polymers and/or urethane (meth)acrylates can also be used to prepare other articles of manufacture, such as food wraps, children's toys and the like.
