Abstract:

The present invention relates to methods of treating inflammatory diseases, inhibiting production of adhesion molecules on endothelial cells, inhibiting production of nitric oxide synthase by macrophages, inhibiting production of tissue factor by endothelial cells, reversing the inhibitory effects of lipophosphoglycan on endothelial cells or macrophages, and targeting a material to endothelial cells, fibroblasts, or monocytes, by administering lipophosphoglycan or lipophosphoglycan analog. Also disclosed is an isolated DNA molecule suitable for connection to a gene capable of transcription where lipophophoglycan or lipophosphoglycan analogues bind to the DNA molecule and antagonizes transcription of the gene.

A precision oven-controlled crystal oscillator (OCXO) uses an adjustment feedback signal that, when mixed with a reference signal from a stable reference oscillator, accurately controls the generation of an output signal from a voltage controlled crystal oscillator (VCXO). An OCXO according to the invention has high stability and high accuracy. The digital OXCO can be manufactured at low cost, and is particularly beneficial for Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) base station applications in cellular communication networks an the like.

Abstract:

The ability to monitor the progression of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in patients is paramount to the study of HIV transmission, in predicting the onset and advancement of disease, and evaluating the clinical efficacy of therapeutics. Present methods available to the clinician for the study of HIV pathogenesis employ surrogate markers. Surrogate markers are biological indicators that tend to reflect, to varying extent, the gradual progression of the asymptomatic state to the development of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). The most commonly used markers are CD4. sup. + lymphocyte counts and HIV p24 antigen production. The use of markers to evaluate disease progression suffers from a number of limitations. No known marker consistently reflects disease progression in all patients and stages of disease. Moreover, an effective marker must rapidly reflect the changes associated with antiviral therapy.
