Abstract:
A solvent that is biodegradable, provides effective solvency for a broad range of tasks and is generally benign to human health is disclosed. This solvent is a mixture of a lactate ester and d-limonene.
Low Odor Composition For Lactate Esters And Other Ester Biosolvents
A solvent composition that comprises a C-Clactate ester and an odor-reducing amount of a tertiary amine having a boiling point at one atmosphere of about 80 C. to about 160 C. is disclosed. The composition (a) is substantially free of odor due to the tertiary amine, (b) exhibits a reduced amount of odor due to the lactate ester as compared to the same composition without the tertiary amine, and (c) is a homogeneous liquid or gel at zero degrees Celsius. A method of reducing the odor of a lactate ester-based solvent is also disclosed.

Process for the production of polysaccharide ethers, e. g. cellulose ethers, are disclosed wherein salts formed during the process, e. g. , sodium nitrate or sodium acetate, are converted to their corresponding acids and bases by means of an electric current, preferably in combination with a bipolar membrane and suitable catiion and/or anion membranes. The acids and bases recovered from the process can be recycled, thereby avoiding the need to provide for disposal of salts.

Abstract:
A solvent composition of about 90 to about 10 percent by weight C-Clactate ester and about 10 to about 90 percent by weight C-Caliphatic alcohol with low odor and enhanced performance properties is disclosed. This composition can also be mixed with other solvents and continue to provide the low odor and enhanced performance properties.
Method Of Conversion Of Syngas Using Microorganism On Hydrophilic Membrane
A stable system for producing liquid products such as ethanol, butanol and other chemicals from syngas components contacts CO or a mixture of COand Hwith a hydrophilic membrane under anaerobic conditions and transfers these components into contact with microorganisms contained as a biofilm on the membrane. Maintaining the microorganisms as a biolayer on the surface of the membrane facilitates cleaning of the membrane surface that retains the biofilm. In addition the shell gas space that surrounds the membranes may be flooded to reduce or remove the biofilm. Agitation of the liquid, by for example the bubbling of gas in the surrounding shell space, can fully or partially remove the biofilm from the membrane.
Modular Membrane Supported Bioreactor For Conversion Of Syngas Components To Liquid Products
Shih-Perng Tsai - Naperville IL, US Rathin Datta - Chicago IL, US Rahul Basu - Naperville IL, US Seong-Hoon Yoon - Naperville IL, US Richard E. Tobey - St. Charles IL, US
A modular membrane supported bioreactor for anaerobic conversion of gas into liquid products including membrane module(s) having a plurality of hollow fibers packed across a cross sectional area of the membrane module in a direction transverse to the axis of the membrane module; a membrane vessel for retaining the membrane module(s) at least partially submerged in a process liquid and isolated from ambient atmosphere; and a gas supply conduit operably connected to the hollow fibers for supplying a process gas to the hollow fiber lumens. The gas supply conduit enables the formation of a biofilm on the outer surface of the hollow fiber wall by interaction of microorganisms with the process gas and the production of a liquid product that mixes with the process liquid.
