Abstract:

In response to a user request to view specific digital content, the user's set top box (STB) accesses a verification entity via a persistent network connection. The STB establishes the user's identity with the verification entity, for instance, by reading identity credentials from a smart card. In response to the verification entity having stored a license for the user to view the digital content, the STB receives a license key from the verification entity. In addition, the STB receives an encrypted access key from an access key source corresponding to a segment of encrypted digital content. The license key is used to decrypt the encrypted access key, which is, in turn, used to decrypt the segment of encrypted digital content. A user may transfer his or her license in whole or in part to another user by sending a transfer request to the verification entity.

An editing device accesses a media program and a user of the editing device designates excerpts within the media program. Bookmarks are generated for the designated excerpts. The bookmarks are transmitted via a network from the editing device to a playback device. By reference to the received bookmarks, the playback device presents an edited version of the media program that includes only the designated excerpts.

Specifically this dislcosure deals with the mechanisms to allow memory to be treated as a partitioned resource, regardless of the physical implementation of the data storage in the playback device. Manage the memory on a digital media player as logical partitions, not just physical partitions between different types of memory. This will treat the entire memory space as a uniform piece of memory, regardless of whether the memory is internal memory with battery backup, Flash memory that behaves like a logical disk, rotating media that is read/write (typically magnetic disk or CD-RW or DVD-RW) or rotating media that is read only. Overlaid on this uniform memory model is a partitioned memory model that divides the memory into logical devices that are used to constrain the size of the memory used for various (logical) types of digital media.

Abstract:

One embodiment disclosed relates to a method of operating a network switch to provide wireless redundancy in a network. A keep-alive control packet is periodically transmitting over a wireless link, wherein the keep-alive control packet has a destination MAC address being that of the other switch on the other side of the wireless link, and wherein the keep-alive control packet is specifically designated to be identified as a keep-alive type packet. The specific designation may be implemented by having a source MAC address comprising a predetermined reserved MAC address. A key portion of one embodiment is the detection of the nearest neighbor in a point-to-point connection without confusion with another device elsewhere in the network. Other embodiments are also disclosed.
