A safety brake for use on a wheelchair, specifically for the purpose of preventing the wheelchair from rolling rearward when the occupant attempts to exit or enter the wheelchair. The safety brake allows forward movement but prevents rearward movement unless the occupant pulls back on the spring loaded brake handles. Upon release of the brake handles the rearward movement is prevented. The assembly replaces existing brake assemblies on wheelchairs and is designed specifically for the cognitively impaired and invalids to enable safe disembarkation from the wheelchair.
A system and method for monitoring the location of an individual includes (a) a band attached to the individual that has a pressure actuated tamper indicator and (b) a monitoring/tracking unit that may be used to both monitor whether the individual has left a predetermined area and to provide an indication of the direction to the individual. The band may include a latch that applies pressure to a pressure sensitive pad when the latch is closed. When the latch is opened, pressure is removed and the transmitter may provide an indication that the band has been removed. The monitoring/tracking unit may include directional and omnidirectional antennae and a self-contained power source for portable operation of the unit.
System And Method For Detecting Movement Of An Infant From A Secure Area
An electronically and visually detectable diaper or article of apparel is used in a system and method for detecting the unauthorized movement of an infant from a secure area in a hospital. The diaper may have electronically detectable indicator tags embedded therein that are detectable by a transmitting and receiving unit positioned adjacent openings to the secure area. The diaper may also include a visually conspicuous appearance to defeat attempts to thwart the electronic detection system. The indicator tags may be positioned in perpendicular planes so that the transmitting and receiving unit may detect the diaper, regardless of the diaper's orientation as it passes through the transmitting and receiving unit.
