BBC America's first original drama demanded an innovative and engaging social media campaign to spread the word about a gritty new show on a network known for its British imports. Copper, from Homicide creators Tom Fontana and Barry Levinson, is set in NYC’s notorious Five Points in 1864. We wanted to give people on Facebook an authentic memento from the era that they would want to share. We partnered with Mark Michaelson, combining his amazing 'Least Wanted' collection of vintage mug shots with fan-submitted photos to artfully composite your face onto the face of an actual 19th-century criminal. The results are striking. Inspired by the fast image replacement technology, and using advanced facial recognition APIs, the Mugshot Yourself Facebook app recognized and analyzed your face in a captured photo, factoring in environmental data about lighting and the rotation and angle of your face, and blended your image with a historical mug shot curated by Michaelson. The twin engines of the internet—ego and stalking—quickly sprang to life as people mugshot themselves and shared their criminal faces all over the internet, launching Copper to become BBC America's highest-rated series premiere of all time.
